Shonishin is a Japanese form of acupuncture for infants and children. It is simple, gentle and effective. Popularised in the 1700’s in the Osaka region of Japan, the treatment is increasingly being used around the world.

The Bio-Energetic System
A person’s bio-energetic system is not fully formed as a child. A child’s bio-energetic system can be easily over stimulated. Consequently, when health problems occur, they can progress rapidly.

How Does It Work?
Shonishin is a gentle, specialized, and mostly non-inserted acupuncture treatment that is both comfortable and even enjoyable for children. Dramatic results occur, even with just a light treatment. Three non-inserted needles – the enshin, the teishin, and the zanshin – form the basis of Shonishin Paediatric Acupuncture. Shonishin involves different kinds of stimulation such as rhythmic stroking, tapping, rubbing and pressing the skin. These techniques harmonize and strengthen a child’s vital energy. The length of treatment varies depending on the age of the child and the condition, but each session may last between 1-5 minutes. Generally speaking, you can say that the older the age of the child, the longer the treatment.

What Kind of Problems Can it Treat?
Shonishin can be used to treat a variety of problems including:

  • Failure to thrive (FTT) [also known as faltering weight or weight faltering]
  • Colic, excessive night crying, temper tantrums
  • Indigestion, GERD, constipation, and diarrhea
  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • A weak biological constitution
  • Allergies, asthma, and colds
  • Eczema and hives
